Doing a little more research it looks like recycled glass in concrete increases the compressive strength of the cement.
Pros
-Fine glass is better than course glass
-Cement gets stronger in higher temperatures
-Cement looks glossier
-Resistance to abrasion
-Durable
Cons
- No recycled glass plant in Kamloops

I have a friend who is a cribber and he agrees that glass will be better than using rubber. But he brings up the point of Kamloops may not have a glass recycling plant. Maybe check the accessibility of crushed glass for the financial point of view.
ReplyDeleteWe are intending to install concrete countertops containing recycled glass in the Green Dream Home. They look nice and use up some glass: http://planetgreen.discovery.com/home-garden/glass-counter.html .
ReplyDeleteHey David in my first work term I worked for a structural engineering company. The engineers there have tons of experience with concrete design. Brian Tomecek has a masters in engineering and has been in the game for 20 years. I bet he would be happy to answer questions you might have.

I have looked a various pictures of concrete countertops with recycled glass in them. Using a variety of coloured glass makes the concrete more esthetically pleasing as well.
ReplyDeleteI have a link for you. I hope it'll help you out a little bit

Hey Dave, I came across this article about the LEED ratings and concrete types. Its pretty neat, its called An Engineer's Guide to: Building Green with Concrete. Heres the link to download the article.

Hey Dave here's a link to a civil engineering site they talk about using glass in structural concrete. http://cedb.asce.org/cgi/WWWdisplay.cgi?154817
ReplyDeletehey Dave,
ReplyDeleteSo I was scrolling the internet and there is a site that talks about using recycled concrete as aggregate for new concrete. I thought that was really interesting. I don't know if that is a direction you want to go but maybe it can help you with your project. Here is the site.
